July 2024 Webinar on AI and Autonomous Weapons

July 29, 2024

On Monday, July 29th, 2024 the Center for AI Policy (CAIP) hosted a webinar titled "Autonomous Weapons and Human Control: Shaping AI Policy for a Secure Future."

The webinar began with an introductory address and Q&A featuring Mark Beall. Mr. Beall is the co-founder and senior advisor to the American Security Fund, a center-right advocacy organization established to confront emerging threats to our national security and to protect America’s technological leadership. Prior to this, he helped build and scale the US Department of Defense Joint AI Center. He led its strategy and policy directorate, spearheading the development of DoD-wide AI governance, the 16-nation AI Partnership for Defense, and responsible AI policy.  He co-authored an influential report on the risks of frontier AI to national security, commissioned by the US Department of State.

Following Mr. Beall's remarks, the webinar featured a presentation and audience Q&A with Stuart Russell, Professor of Computer Science at Berkeley and an Honorary Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford. Professor Russell leads the Center for Human-Compatible AI (CHAI) and Berkeley's Kavli Center for Ethics, Science, and the Public. He is a leading researcher in artificial intelligence and the author (with Peter Norvig) of the standard text in the field, which has been used in over 1,500 universities across 135 countries. He also wrote a popular book on AI's risks titled Human Compatible: Artificial Intelligence and the Problem of Control. Over the past decade, Professor Russell has written and spoken extensively about the need for policies to address autonomous weapons.

Jason Green-Lowe, Executive Director of CAIP, moderated the discussion.
