Public Opinion on a Federal Office for AI

At an inflection point such as ours, we should not squander this opportunity to establish real oversight over the largest technology companies. Congress must create a new agency with the resources and meaningful enforcement authority to regulate these firms in a comprehensive, considered, and continuous manner.

Those were the words of Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Peter Welch (D-VT), in a letter to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) last week.

The Center for AI Policy seconds this sentiment, especially in the context of overseeing advanced general-purpose AI models like GPT-4 and its successors.

Importantly, the American public endorses this view. As far as we're aware, every single quality poll has found that the majority of Americans support creating a federal office to regulate AI.
